Today wildfire 3.2.0 got released and you can read the official announce here. But is my opinion that this is a premature release. If not lets see, in december 17 to manage SSL certificates under wildfire is considered a problem. They even comment on the fact that Jabber Software Foundation (JSF) has become a Intermediate Certification Authority and that this will increase the number of servers and users using SSL in the Jabber network. And what happens in the 3.2.0 RC2 release: SSL is partially broken when using JSF certificates. The fix seems to be….. to remove the certificates and use self signed ones.

Proper use of SSL/TLS with good certificates needs to be standard in the XMPP Federation network. This is why this step in releasing the final version of wildfire was a premature one.

Today I was a bit tired of the Ruby codding I was doing (a Mobile IP network simulator for a class project) and considering that I had to start the GUI part and needed to read the QTRuby tutorial AND I have never used/played with QT I resolved to update Wildfire to the 3.1.1 version and close a pending bug.

I also found out that Wildfire comes with built in transports for some old services. I already had PyMSN-t installed so in my server I just activated the others.

ontem, provoquei numa coreana e numa peruana a mesma reacção que os Beatles provocavam nos jovens da altura e que vemos nas imagens que ficaram na televisão

Foi assustador! Estavam a falar de aprender outras línguas e a dizer que gostavam de aprender português. Aí pediram para eu dizer alguma coisa em português. Nunca o devia ter feito. assim que acabei uma ou duas frases começaram com gritos estridentes e mãos na cabeça: “Oh my god, it’s so beautifull”; “I have to learn portuguese!” “it’s sound so sweet”

[A propósito, alguém conhece algum podcast - ninguém sabia o que era um podcast neste andar - para aprender português. Eu só encontrei um para português do Brasil...]

E não se calavam com o sweet e eu já estava a ficar com dor de cabeça. Ora, achei aquilo estranho, mas lembrei-me que relativamente à minha voz há duas opiniões no geral: ou tenho voz de desenho animado ou tenho uma voz doce (ugh!) - a mim não me incomoda, eu não ouço nem uma, nem outra

E não fossem ficar com a impressão errada, até porque já haviam dito que o meu inglês era muito “sweet” - começo a ficar com sentimentos negativos em relação a esta palavrinha - disse-lhes que era possível ser da voz, uma vez que tinha feito rádio durante alguns anos e foi isto que me provocou umas…

…saudades imensas do cheiro do estúdio de rádio…

… e da Manela a ralhar de eu trocar os cds e as capas e de eu fazer sinais estranhos quando ela tinha de lançar uma pista
Neste programa, um dos que fiz em contexto académico, até se ouve alguém a tossir na sala ao lado!
E quando a cadeira rangia? Mas fora isso tínhamos um estúdio auto-operado de fazer inveja a muito boa rádio por aí…

Well i came back to kde a few months ago. And am now playing with some “native” tools. kopete for IM and amarok for playing music.
From my experience amarok gets much more stable if one does not use the auto-update collection feature.

Kopete comes with a nice plugin to get the song that is playing from amarok (and other players) and set it as the “Playing Song” just like msn+mediaplayer in MSWindows. But i wanted more so i did this little script to fetch the cd-cover from amarok and set it as your avatar.

Now i just need kopete to support either:
Jep-8
or
Jep-84
or
Jep-153

So i can see and send avatars to my jabber contacts.

Bad things about this script: it is not possible to start/stop it using kopete as it is fully external. It needs imagemagick (not big of a problem). It will not detect when amarok does not have a picture and will display your avatar as a CD
There is probably a problem when amarok is not running, in that case PICTURE will probably be empty and diff will return two. But the fix is trivial and stays as an exercise for the reader

The ejabberd ebuild is in Portage right now, it builds and runs but is hardmasked because i have not been able to give it a test on my test server (it took some 3 hours just to build erlang).

Some work still needs to be done in the ebuild, we now have two jabber server implementations, it is time to get a virtual so that transports can choose.
