Gentoo on the Dell D630Colocado por Gustavo Felisberto em Ciência/Tecnologia, Gentoo, Gentoo-dev, tags: d630, dell, GentooThis is just a pointer to my guide about Gentoo on the Dell D630. I’ve been trying to stress test a RTSP Streaming server. My goal is to see how many clients a particular server can handle. Apple has a tool called StreamingLoadTool, but virtually no information on it, also it crashes alot with:
after running for some time. All other tools I saw where commercial windows based multi purpose test tools that would need a giant test farm.

Assertion `c->xlib.lock’ failedColocado por Gustavo Felisberto em Ciência/Tecnologia, Gentoo, tags: javaWith XCB and java graphical applications on recent distributions one gets: java: xcb_xlib.c:82: xcb_xlib_unlock: Assertion `c->xlib.lock’ failed. This is very well documented (just google a bit). So this serves mostly as a mental note for the way to fix it. $ sed -i ‘s/XINERAMA/FAKEEXTN/g’ /opt/sun-jdk-1.6.0.04/jre/lib/i386/xawt/libmawt.so or the libawt.so of your JRE. Remember that many programs may come with they’re own JRE and not use the one provided by the system. A week ago I stared on my new work. I was at IPN and now I’m on the corporate world working at WIT-Software developing software for mobile systems as well as backend code for Mobile operators. As an added bonus last Week I received my last grade and now have my CS degree

I’ve started it and this week I added some (21) fish. I’m very happy for finally having the chance to play with this. I’ll keep adding pictures here as time goes by. Again I must say THANK YOU Raquel. One day at a time you keep my world turning.

Master in Open Source Software?Colocado por Gustavo Felisberto em Ciência/Tecnologia, GentooThere are some rumors that the Portuguese ISCTE is going to start a 2 years master program in OSS software. I must say that I find this a very dumb idea. Software Engineering is an area in Computer Science, the same way Networks, Artificial Intelligence, Database, Operating Systems etc etc. OSS is a distribution model in CS. The Wiki page I started about the Efika got a honorable mention award. Over the last few months the Efika has been working fine inside the card box but I’m considering a new casing. Also the bin packages are a bit outdated. Must update that one of these days.

Skype + Video now in LinuxColocado por Gustavo Felisberto em Ciência/Tecnologia, Gentoo-dev, tags: linux, skype, video, webcamsSkype just released the first beta version of their Linux client with video support. I already added it to the Gentoo Portage, but as it is a Beta release you’ll have to package.unmask it:
As Skype beta tester I’ve been using these releases for some time and must say that I’m quite happy with the result, just a few quirks with some webcams, but nothing to serious, and maybe now there will be a good motive to pressure for nice drivers. If you have any problems fell free to bug me and I’ll try to give you a hand. My Skype name is gustavofelisberto

JBoss and EJB3 is so Cool……Colocado por Gustavo Felisberto em Ciência/Tecnologia, Gentoo, Geral…. or then again it might suck. Personally I find it to be a very complex platform. And with my experience, the more complex a system is, the more bugs it has. For the last two weeks I’ve been trying to develop a very small application, it consists of a Web Service that is accessed by some EJB Session Beans. The web service is probably working as it gets deployed, and I can get the WSDL from it. For purposes of reference I’m using jboss-4.2.1.GA with Java 1.6.0_03 on Linux. Right now I have a jsp file that gets a LibrarySearcher (Remote bean), this in turn gets a WebBookSearcher (Local bean) and this calls the WebService. I’m getting this error:
I’ve googled and could only find references to the top error when the deployed ear contained extra JAR files for the WS engine that conflicted with the one already in JBoss. In the last two weeks I’ve been working with Zabbix, a very good Health Monitoring system. This post serves as a mental note for myself on how custom scripts for notification work.

Extended AT commands for GSMColocado por Gustavo Felisberto em Ciência/Tecnologia, Gentoo, Geral, tags: at_commands, smsIn the last week I’ve been working with sending and receiving SMS messages using a mobile phone connected to the computer. For that I had to use something that I was familiar with back in 1995/1996…. AT Commands So far I’ve used: I must say that the worst phones for this task are the most expensive The Nokia 6210……. Just works…. They don’t make them like they used to…….

Optimus Tricked MeColocado por Gustavo Felisberto em Ciência/Tecnologia, Gentoo, Geral, sociedade, tags: mobile_operator, optimus, siemens_s45Some 5 years ago I contacted my mobile operator (Optimus) and using the bonus points I had i got myself a new telephone. At that time the Siemens S45 seemed a good choice and I was informed that after a 2 year contract I could request the unlocking code for the phone. Now after 5 years I contacted their client support line to request the code as I needed to use the phone in a new operator. The person who answered my request now told me the full sentence:
5 years ago there was no information on such a payment. I was tricked. On top of that to request 75€ for unlocking a phone that was no commercial value is pure madness. Since June 2004 I’ve been maintaining the Skype ebuilds in Gentoo and because I pest them with bugs and issues I’ve been asked to join the Closed Beta Program in November 2006. In the 12th and 13th of September Skype organized the Closed Beta Days 2007. It is an annual event that joins people from the Skype team as well as external developers, beta testers and translators and this year it happened in the beautiful city of Prague. It was a very good opportunity to meet the Skype team, other beta testers and to get a better idea on the future of Skype. The event was very well organized and the seminars were fast and to the point, covering many areas of interest. More info on what I saw there and about the future of Skype in Linux? No can do Thanks to Raul and Antoine for organizing this event. Thanks to Marco, Ryan Hunt and Jonathan for the good time. I hope to meet you all next year.

dotProject madnessColocado por Gustavo Felisberto em Ciência/Tecnologia, Gentoo, tags: dotproject, web_based_project_managementI’m working solo again on this new secret project, but upper management wants, as normal, to keep up what is currently being done. At the place were I’m working they are trying to use some web based project management system. The one that is currently installed is dotProject, and I must say that I find that the tasks module just sucks. I’ll try to explain why I think it sucks in two words: “dynamic tasks” If one tries to create a dynamic task that depends on another task one gets:
Dynamic tasks are important in many contexts, but specially in projects that do not have a very clear predefined set of tasks. So I’m on the look for something else. I like planner but it lacks task logs and completion status. Also one other thing that would be great would be a way to share the information about the document in realtime, and not depend on cvs/svn to share the project file. So something web based would be great. My CS course has a mandatory 5 internship. Normally students either go to one of the labs and research a topic or travel to an outside company where they normally develop some module in a software. I did the second with a twist. Went to an outside company/institution and developed IP PBX system from the ground up. That meant I had to plan the all thing. Hardware and software. It was really fun to do, although I lost many nights of sleep.

Google Desktop Makes Thunderbird go Crazy?Colocado por Gustavo Felisberto em Ciência/Tecnologia, GentooDue to the need of re-installing my system in a pinch I decided to try Kubuntu. So in the last weeks I’ve been running feisty and the gutsy on my laptop. Today I decided to give the new Google Desktop Search for Linux a try. It was running happy until I started thunderbird. I noticed that thunderbird had some momentary freezes. I opened a terminal and run top. And there was thunderbird eating 89% CPU!! I stoped it and restarted it and the problem did not go away. After some tought I exited Google Desktop and thunderbird got back to normal values!!! Restarted Google Desktop and there was Thunderbird eating all my CPU. I did some searches and came up empty handed…. Maybe it is just me, but I cant have both running

Back to the stone age OR how did the Iphone change my lifeColocado por Gustavo Felisberto em Ciência/Tecnologia, Gentoo, tags: gsm, iphoneIn 1995 I was offered a 386SX machine. It was my first PC after spending my youth with a Atari ST (FM and e). I got this machine that was already outdated but I wanted to try the PC wagon. I tried PC-DOS 7 and Windows 3.1. And it sucked!!! In my Atari I would have my DTP application running some 30 seconds after turning it on. In the PC it took some 5 minutes from the power on to a windows screen. And some more 2 minutes to start Microsoft Word. So i did “the switch”…. To Linux For years and years I talked people into using Linux. First on servers, then on Workstations. And when things were starting to get bright there came “the light” for the unix world. And the Light was Mac OS X. The first versions had some strange quirks but worked very well, and people started saying: At about the same time Apple introduced the iPod music player, and the cool looking PowerBook G4 and from this time on the future of Apple changed from down the hill to up up the hill.[1] Apple is cool. Is the message that lingers in the back of our minds. Until the iPhone. The thing is just darn stupid. For years we wanted a mobile phone that had a decent OS that we could master. Mr Jobs now wants us to believe that it is the iPhone. Want an API? Use the browser! Sorry but “Use the browser” is just plain idiot. My spreadsheet is going to be on Google Docs? Sorry people but the iPhone may be fast, but JavaScript will eat your memory. And the Phone Bill will have you take a second mortgage on the house. I went to Optimus (my GSM provider) and asked how could I connect to the network with 3.5G and not buying a dedicated card. They told me I would have to buy one of two phones that were 3.5g (so far so good), but the data Rates were 0.0025€ for 1kbyte. Charged a chunks of 10kbytes. That means one megabyte will be: 2,5€ !!!!!! So Mr. Jobes: TAKE A WALK DOWN REALITY LANE!!! If I buy a new phone. I’ll go for the OpenMoko Neo 1973. Ooooo And if you say to me: Prices will drop! You’ll have to present me a cool alternative to any of the programs that the iPhone has running native, but know running inside the browser. [1]OS X Desktop Version – March 2001 I’m thinking of giving my 3 year old Targa a rest. It has a noisy (fan), it burns my legs and is not that fast. But what should I get? I really do not know the answer. I was thinking of getting a Mac Book Pro. But after the countless issues reported were by Paula I’m thinking that they are not that kick ass machines that they used to be (mind you all I’m talking of hardware). Add the fact that I would be running Linux on the machine and any advantage blows away. Maybe I’ll :
Because right now what does my laptop not do? Does not run Compiz/Beryl with the closed source drivers from ATI, so I’m loosing some eye candy. Save money!!!!!

Social WineColocado por Gustavo Felisberto em Gentoo, Geral, tags: social_networking, wineNothing like a nice wine to make a good meal even better. Nothing like a glass of Porto with some cheese, nuts or almonds at the end of the day.
Mix that with social networking and you get a nice adegga. Pity I don’t have an invite to test more, but the idea surely is sweet. |
