This is a mental note to myself so that I do not have to google every time I want to do an upgrade of a Ubuntu system to a new release.

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get get upgrade
sudo apt-get install update-manager
sudo update-manager -d

  1. sudo apt-get get upgrade? Are you sure?

  2. Or just accept the notification to the new release!

Well, I just need to do “sudo update-manager -d” and follow the instructions.
Last time I checked (a few days ago), Karmic was using a kernel with a bug that prevents me to use my mobile broadband. If you need it don’t upgrade until it’s fixed…

  4. The “sudo apt-get upgrade” ensures you have the system update before trying to change the release. It is probably not necessary, specially if one uses the update system.

In the same manner the “sudo apt-get install update-manager” is completely pointless if one has the system up to date.

By I like to do things slowly.

Paula: Are you using Ubuntu again?

  5. António Campos: I wanted to use the Karmic release candidate. RCs will not be presented for upgrade.

Yes, it’s a case of laziness. Jaunty is an out-of-the-box operating system. You connect something here and he says “oooh you connected that, should I install it?”, you say yes and he takes care of the rest.
If I need to connect my printer here, I just have to connect the cable on the usb. Some months ago, I needed to connect the same printer in windows, it took more than two hours and a headache: a nightmare.

I still prefer the Debian philosophy though. I like their social contract and although I am always mocking with their “it will come out, when it’s ready and not before”, I really admire that.
I tried Debian 5.0, but it would take some time to install the printer (I think there was another more serious specific problem related with my laptop hardware, but I can’t remember what was it). I think it’s automatic in more unstable versions of Debian, but I can’t afford to have a so unstable OS.

Ubuntu is GNU/Linux, so the most important thing for me (keeping my options open) is fulfilled, but I must confess they have one or two things that annoy me.

Can I surprise you a little bit more? I’m using gnome (yuck). Yes, it’s true. I think KDE4 will be great, but it is not stable enough for me now.
So, I’m waiting for Debian and for KDE.
In many, many years ( ;-) ) from now, Debian will release their Debian 6.0 with KDE4 and then I will have a perfect operating system again :-)

oh by the way, Paulo?! Pffft, I’m a girl!
