Do you like music in the morning?
Colocado por Gustavo Felisberto em Geral, tags: apple #failsI am a bit tired of waking up the the marimba sounds from my iPhone. I wanted to play some calm music to help me get started. So I went to see if I could setup a music or playlist like in the old iPods. You cant. You can only play sounds that are ring tones. And the reader says:
-Well…. It seems stupid to play ring tones but not to play a song…. So how do you go around getting a ringtone from a music you have?
Well that is the funny part. If you bought the music from iTunes store Apple is generous enough to charge you another 99 cents for the permission to create the ringtone.
What if you have the music because you:
1- Bought it from another online store
2- Bought the CD and made a lawful copy to your computer
Apple just tells you you cannot do it. Either re-rebuy the music or move along.
I know you can get another software that will strip a peace of the music to amr, and then send that file to the iPhone and “shazam” a free ringtone. But that is just STUPID!!
If I have a music I should be free to use it as a ringtone/wake up music. Who is Apple to pass judgement on what I have on MY system?
@jpedroso: You see why I may like Apple’s products but have very little respect for it as a company?

Agree. While I do nurture a strange kind of machine-love for all things Apple (hell, even their OS), I deeply despise their philosophy regarding anything-near-iTunes.
Meh, what the hell… Nobody’s perfect and everyone’s gotta make a living…
It’s not like they made it too hard to do it anyway…
1. Import song into a track in GarageBand
2. Menu Share – Send ringtone to iTunes
3. ???
4. Profit!
Gustavo,
As the Devil’s Advocate, Apple/iTunes aside, let me start with this: Ringtones are a fucking multibillion dollar business! Keyword: BUSINESS, as in a whole fucking business on itself! Secondly, you bought music, either on a CD or in another online store. You didn’t bought a ringtone. Sad but true.
And the latter there, my friend, is the foundation of copyright laws. iTunes has reached mainstream as no other Apple product has, and so, if iTunes is going to mess with the ringtone business in a large scale, they better get ready for it. So, ultimately, I’d say it’s all about copyright damage control and the kind of limitation you’re facing may be just that: damage control.
Nevertheless, it’s not like Apple’s not trying to get around those limitations. You were already told how to do ringtones using out of the box Apple products. Also mind that you may well be talking about the company/product that successfully sent DRM to kiss the stars in the music business.
That being said, I’m on your side of the fence. That’s why I don’t buy music at iTunes store nor other online stores (yet).
Aside: It would be nice if you stop labeling me as an Apple fanboy. I sincerely think you are confusing respect with fanaticism, or pragmatism with idealism.
Pedro Cardoso: It is even possible to do it on a Windows box with just iTunes: http://www.ehow.com/how_2160460_custom-iphone-ringtones-free.html . I’m just pissed with having to go throo all this just to have a song playing when I wake up.
I left Apple because of this kind of thing. If I buy a music I should be able to listen it in every device. Apple has beautiful devices, the problem is they are beautiful only in the exterior… like a beautiful woman/man with no brains.
I understand your feelings, you shouldn’t be forced to do all of that or buy it again.
And the worst of that, you can’t try to solve it (if you want to stay on the right side of the law, that is)
Yes, it’s stupid. Don’t give your money to them
For some reason I refuse to buy even Apps from the AppStore. And just do my shopping on Cydia Store.
