Skype + Video now in Linux
Posted by: Gustavo Felisberto in Ciência/Tecnologia, Gentoo-dev, tags: linux, skype, video, webcamsSkype just released the first beta version of their Linux client with video support. I already added it to the Gentoo Portage, but as it is a Beta release you’ll have to package.unmask it:
emerge –sync
echo net-im/skype >> /etc/portage/package.unmask
echo “net-im/skype **” >>/etc/portage/package.keywords
emerge -av skype
echo net-im/skype >> /etc/portage/package.unmask
echo “net-im/skype **” >>/etc/portage/package.keywords
emerge -av skype
As Skype beta tester I’ve been using these releases for some time and must say that I’m quite happy with the result, just a few quirks with some webcams, but nothing to serious, and maybe now there will be a good motive to pressure for nice drivers.
If you have any problems fell free to bug me and I’ll try to give you a hand. My Skype name is gustavofelisberto

Haha what funny timing. I was just explaining to my coworkers that we’ll have to do have our conference over MSN instead because Skype hasn’t got video in Linux yet. Nice. (-:
I find your ideas fascinating, and I would like to subscribe to your newsletter.
rm -rf skype
Skype is proprietary (but working, ok) shit and you don’t know where your data goes to.
Instead one should focus on open standard alternatives like SIP or Jingle (XMPP/Jabber extension)
Yearh, you just don’t have any clue where the data goes, it’s not that nice…
Georg & Linux: Use a network analyzer like wireshark and please stop being conspiracy bufs.
Georg: SIP and Jingle are very interesting, but simply do not work as needed. And the problem is in the protocol. Just because something is Open it does not mean it will work.
You wanna know what I was told by a drunken man in a pub? (-; SIP is overly complex. That man was Mark Spencer, author of Asterisk! Having said that, I use SIP for my main phone line and (since ditching the god awful Grandstream phone) it works great.
