I’m thinking of giving my 3 year old Targa a rest. It has a noisy (fan), it burns my legs and is not that fast. But what should I get? I really do not know the answer.
I was thinking of getting a Mac Book Pro. But after the countless issues reported were by Paula I’m thinking that they are not that kick ass machines that they used to be (mind you all I’m talking of hardware). Add the fact that I would be running Linux on the machine and any advantage blows away.
Maybe I’ll :
- end up opening my Targa and fix the dissipation issues on the CPU
- Upgrade from 1GB to 2GB
- Investigate if I can switch the CPU for a less hot one
- Buy a new battery
Because right now what does my laptop not do? Does not run Compiz/Beryl with the closed source drivers from ATI, so I’m loosing some eye candy.
Save money!!!!!

Well, if you decide to still buy a laptop, and want to avoid Apple (which would be in my oppinion a wise decision ;-)), you can allways consider buying it OS free!
Mind Booster:
After posting this I saw that article on the PrintScreen feed. It is a VERY GOOD initiative. I just hope they find a way to buy HP laptops with now OS, that would make me very happy.
Well Gustavo, let me give you my experience with Apple. About 6 elements of my family have an Apple laptop (one has an iMac), ranging from Macbooks to Macbooks Pro and also some old Powerbooks.
The only one that ever had problems was the one pertaining to my girlfriend. The Seagate harddrive died. We scheduled an appointment on an Apple store for the same day and in about one hour they got us a disk replacement and installed everything back. And they were kind enough to provide us with a laptop during the waiting time so we could something useful. (More details about this here: http://mywheel.net/blog/index.php/2007/06/23/my-first-experience-with-apple-assistance/)
So I truly believe that the incidents with Paula were single incidents and do not reflect the quality of this machines. I’ve owned laptops from HP/Compaq, IBM and Asus and I’d be willing to pay up to two times more for getting an Apple laptop instead of other HP, IBM or Asus.
