Cory Doctorow on Steve Jobs’ memo: I’d like to keep my options open
Colocado por Paula Simões em Ciência/Tecnologia, tags: apple, cory_doctorow, drm, itunes, musicQuando li o memo do Steve Jobs sobre DRM pensei “óptimo”, mas talvez porque sou demasiado desconfiada ou porque um excelente professor me disse uma vez numa aula de jornalismo “quando alguém te der uma informação, pergunta-te sempre porque é que aquela pessoa te está a dar a informação”, ficou-me, do memo do Jobs, um travo desagradável a coitadinho, que não encaixa com o senhor da Apple.
Hoje, encontrei na Salon um artigo, sobre esta matéria, do senhor que tem uma mac tattoo no braço e que expõe muito bem o tal travo que me ficou.
Tenho encontrado pessoas que não sentem restrições no uso de músicas compradas na iTunes Store, antes de me aperceber destes problemas comprei um iPod e neste caso específico também eu não tenho restrições (por enquanto), mas como o próprio Cory Doctorow termina o seu artigo, também eu gosto de manter as minhas opções em aberto:
I think that it’s reasonable to assume that Apple won’t always make the world’s best music player. I’d like to keep my options open. But the longer you own an iPod, the more likely it is you’ll buy more iTunes music, and the fewer options you’ll have.

His text is such a crap. He’s complaining about $150 of songs which can easily be de-drm’ed and imported into a zune, using either a pc or a mac system, and converted from a standard format (AAC/MP4) into any other standard (WAV, MP3, etc)? On the other hand, if I get a drm protected wma file, I can’t do bull with it because there is no way to even play it on any other system than a windows system (Windows Media Player for mac doesn’t and will never play drm protected files).
How can someone mention lock-in into apple?
Just as another example, Microsoft forbids anyone to use WMA (not even talking about DRM protected files, just the standard Windows Media format) together with other DRM protections. So Microsoft is allowed to use MP3, AAC, etc in their zunes, but apple is *not* allowed to use WMA in the iPod. Who’s locking in?

de qualquer forma, pelo menos nos US, é ilegal fazeres o que quer que seja para retirar o drm, do que quer que seja…

Nunca pensei dizer isto…. Mas a razão pela qual é possivel retirar (de forma ilegal) a protecção nos MP4 do iTunes e não se consegue nos wma da micro$oft é simples….. Os gajos da Micro$oft souberam fazer a coisa como deve ser…..

Yes, Microsoft’s DRM also sucks. Yet, in this case, Apple is the one company that has “the iTunes effect”, and they’re the ones controling the digital music market nowadays.
Oh yes, there is. If you wanted to say that “They’re not the only ones”, then yes, you’re right. But that doesn’t change the fact that Apple is doing Bad Things(TM).

Isso seria assim se de facto o DRM da Microsoft não fosse crackavel… Ainda ontem chegou “às bancas” esta notícia.
